Documented historical evidence of human civilization dates back to 10,000 B.C. Starting from a very primitive stage, the growth of civilization is on accelerating mode, particularly after the first industrial revolution in 18th century. But why humans always try to grow – a trait not found in animals or any other living creatures, has always been a point of speculation among all logical minds.
Basic needs like thirst, hunger, health and safety have to be satisfied by every life on earth. Attributes like intelligence, love and affection are visible both in human and animal worlds – only the degree and intensity differ. So in terms of basic nature, how we humans are different from animals ?
This question has drawn attention of philosophers and great thinkers since long. Way back 350 B.C. Aristotle, the Greek philosopher, first observed Homo Economicus – Man is Economic. The economic activity only distinguishes man from animal and facilitates human world to progress through the path of innovation.
It was also comprehended by Aristotle that the seed of all economic activities lies in the inherent urge of every human being to rise over others. He commented – “Innate self-interest is the primary economic motivator”.
Whether we call it ambition or greed, it is characteristically human. While animals are satisfied when their basic needs are fulfilled, humans are in a never-ending race (critics call it Rat Race) to compete and outdo each other. An unlimited dream and quest for a better life set us apart from the animal kingdom. It would not be wrong to call human – A cold rational calculator, continuously trying to calculate how to derive maximum benefits from his actions.
A COLD CALCULATOR
There is nothing wrong being ambitious as it is the differentiator between a man and animal that fuel growth of human society. Our understanding and acceptance of this intrinsic human nature is important. It will allow us to align our opinion in the most logical way whenever we talk about Business or Management. Even the continuous changes in economic, political and social scenario, derive its motive from this fundamental law of human nature.
